Indianapolis residents, brace yourselves for a significant road closure as a portion of 82nd Street prepares to shut down for the long-anticipated Nickel Plate Trail construction. The project, which has been in the works for years, will transform the area into a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly zone—but it comes with temporary headaches for drivers.
Starting Monday, June 10, the following section will be off-limits to vehicles:
The closure is part of a larger initiative to convert the old Nickel Plate Railroad corridor into a multi-use trail. Once complete, the trail will stretch 16.5 miles, connecting neighborhoods and providing a safer alternative for walkers and bikers.
City officials say the project will enhance quality of life, but some locals are skeptical. "It's great in theory, but the detours are going to be a nightmare during rush hour," said Megan Carter, a frequent commuter.
If weather cooperates, the trail could open by early 2025.
