Santa Rita Jail in Alameda County has long been under scrutiny for its treatment of inmates, but a recent investigation into healthcare provider Wellpath has reignited concerns. Critics claim that the private company, contracted to provide medical services, has failed inmates with substandard care, leading to preventable suffering—and even death.
Wellpath, one of the largest for-profit prison healthcare providers in the U.S., took over Santa Rita’s medical services in 2018. Since then, reports of neglect, delayed treatments, and understaffing have piled up. Families of inmates and advocacy groups are demanding accountability, but county officials insist improvements are underway.
Despite mounting criticism, Alameda County officials maintain that Wellpath has made progress. A recent county audit cited improvements in staffing levels and response times, but advocates argue these changes are superficial.
“We’re seeing the same patterns of neglect, just with better paperwork,” said Maria Lopez, a spokesperson for the Oakland-based Justice Now coalition.
