Step into a world where music meets elegance—the Akron Music Institute is not just a place for lessons; it's an experience that tantalizes the senses. From the moment you walk through the door, the delightful aroma wafting through the air transports you to a luxurious haven, reminiscent of a boutique or an upscale hotel lobby.
Owner Alexandre Marr has crafted a sanctuary for aspiring musicians and seasoned players alike. He collaborated with a fragrance company known for infusing luxury hotel lobbies with captivating scents to create an inviting atmosphere at his new school located in downtown Akron.
Since its grand opening in June at 33 S. Main St., the Akron Music Institute has become a vibrant hub for music education, welcoming students of all ages and skill levels.
Just two months in, the institute has blossomed, boasting over 200 students taking weekly lessons from a talented team of 14 instructors. Marr proudly shares, “We have students as young as four and as old as their 80s.”
Before launching the institute, Marr, a classically trained pianist, held lessons from his home. As demand grew, he recognized the urgent need for quality music instruction in the community.
Marr noted a significant void in quality instruction for classical instruments, particularly in strings. “You can find a piano teacher or a voice teacher, but finding a quality provider for music instruction seems like a huge gap,” he explained.
The Akron Music Institute received funding from the Downtown Akron Partnership’s Start Downtown program, designed to support new businesses and enhance storefront activity. Marr’s initiative adds a fresh layer of cultural richness to the downtown area.
Kimberly Beckett, president and CEO of Downtown Akron Partnership, stated, “This business brings something new to downtown, enhancing the dynamic of the neighborhood.”
Amid managing the institute, Marr personally teaches piano to 50 students, including 10-year-old Arthur Gaton, who praises Marr’s kindness and teaching prowess. Arthur’s mother, Jessica, expressed her admiration for Marr’s approach: “He treats them with the respect and gravitas that one treats a professional musician.”
Marr’s passion for music education began early. He started piano lessons at age 10 and quickly fell in love with teaching. After studying music at the Cleveland Institute of Music and transferring to Kent State University for fashion, he eventually returned to his true calling.
Currently, Marr is also the music director for several organizations, including the popular YouTuber Randy Rainbow. He envisions expanding the Akron Music Institute to offer lessons in brass and reed instruments, aiming to open additional locations in Cleveland within five years.
“Watching my students grow is what truly excites me,” he reflected. “Each student’s journey is unique, filled with different interests and challenges. Teaching is an absolute joy.”
