In a recent workshop hosted by APEC Peru 2024 in Lima, policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers came together to discuss the critical role of clean and low-carbon hydrogen in the sustainable energy future of the region. The focus was on developing clear roadmaps, market-driven indicators, and actionable steps to scale up hydrogen production.
Minister Rómulo Mucho of Peru's Ministry of Energy and Mines highlighted the importance of transitioning towards sustainable energy sources in the face of global challenges. The workshop emphasized the need for harmonized regulations and innovative financing to support hydrogen technology adoption.
Despite the growing interest in clean hydrogen, Dr. Kazutomo Irie of APERC pointed out challenges such as cost competitiveness and infrastructure delays that could hinder its widespread adoption. Participants discussed the importance of cross-border collaboration and the pivotal role women play in shaping policies for sustainable energy practices.

The workshop concluded with a call to action for APEC economies to continue collaborating on hydrogen initiatives to stay at the forefront of the global clean energy transition.
