Chandler

Chandler, Arizona

Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler Metropolitan Statistical Area includes Chandler as a suburb in Maricopa County, Arizona, the United States (MSA). It shares borders with Tempe to the north and west, Mesa to the north, Phoenix to the west, the Gila River Indian Community to the south, and Gilbert to the east. The population of Chandler increased from 236,123 in the 2010 census to 275,987 in the 2020 census.

History

The first veterinarian in Arizona Territory, Dr. Alexander John Chandler, landed on a ranch south of Mesa in 1891 and began studying irrigation engineering. He had purchased 18,000 acres (73 km2) of land by 1900, at which point he started creating designs for a townsite on what was then known as the Chandler Ranch. On May 16, 1912, the townsite office was inaugurated.

(Shortly after the city of Chandler celebrated its centennial on May 17, 2012, the team of the Chandler Museum realized that the city had been honoring the incorrect date. The Chandler Arizonan newspaper had mistakenly reported the founding day as May 17 in May 1912, and over time, locals had forgotten the true date, which was Thursday, May 16, 1912.)

The original townsite was bordered on the north by Galveston Street, the south by Frye Road, the west by Hartford Street, and the east by Hamilton Street. By 1913, a town center had been created, with the Hotel San Marcos housing the state's first grass golf course. In 1914, Chandler High School was founded. After 186 citizens petitioned the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors to permit incorporation, Chandler became a city on February 16, 1920. The first mayor and president of the town council were both chosen to be A.J. Chandler, the creator of the community.

The Great Depression kept Chandler's economy largely afloat (although it was the Depression that led to the cancellation of a second San Marcos hotel), but the cotton crashes a few years later had a much more profound effect on the city's citizens. Williams Air Force Base's establishment in 1941 later caused a little increase in population, although by 1950 Chandler still only had 3,800 residents. It increased to 30,000 by 1980, and since then, it has kept pace with the Phoenix metropolitan area's rapid growth, with suburban residential areas consuming old agricultural plots. The construction of manufacturing facilities by companies in the communications and computing industries like Microchip, Motorola, and Intel contributed to some of this expansion.

The city of Chandler has grown rapidly since the early 1990s, making it one of the states' fastest-growing municipalities. By 2020, there were more than 275,000 people living in more than 100,000 dwellings. The Chandler City Hall and the Chandler Center for the Arts are located amid the city's rebuilt historic downtown, which continues to be its center. The National Civic League selected Chandler an All-America City in 2010. For the 61st annual awards, Chandler was the lone Arizona winner.

Chandler has a total area of 65.5 square miles (170 km2), of which 0.07 square miles (0.18 km2), or 0.11%, are categorized as water. This information comes from the United States Census Bureau. The city's center is located 22 miles (35 km) southeast of Downtown Phoenix along Arizona State Route 87.

With the exception of a few remaining county islands, Chandler has hit its physical boundaries and is unable to further expand due to its proximity to the Gila River Indian Community, Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert, and Phoenix.

Economy

With four facilities in the municipal area, including its first factory to be deemed "environmentally sustainable" under current Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) criteria, computer chip giant Intel plays a significant role in local growth efforts. Other high-tech manufacturing companies collaborate with the local government, and in 2007 their operations employed about 25% of non-government workers. Semiconductor and other electronic component manufacturing was largely unaffected, despite the fact that per capita employment growth in the sector has been declining in Arizona since 2000. A series of tailored grants for the training of net new employees, incorporating the Phoenix urbanized area (27,000 workers now commute to work in other communities), led to a larger market share of (Californian) industry.

Along the Price and Santan highways, in the Price Road Corridor, more than 2,900 jobs have been generated since 2003, and $3 billion in investments have been made. An open-ended, highly visible trade area is "strongly attracted" by three retail malls. The 1,300,000-square-foot (120,000 m2) Chandler Fashion Center, which opened in 2001, has sparked the construction of numerous courts and laneway projects. Wal-Mart is anticipated to attract customers to the southern end of the Corridor from as far south as Hunt Highway, bringing with it a "huge consumer population" that will enhance "the image and perception of the area" in the eyes of many Greater Phoenix citizens and state retail businesses. The success of the northern region can be "expanded to the south" since it is "attractive and has the historic character" to do so.

Infusionsoft, Microchip, and Rogers are among the businesses with their corporate headquarters in Chandler. Bashas' main office is located on a county island that Chandler encircles.

Culture

The yearly Ostrich Festival in Chandler is well-known. Chandler's main industry at first was agricultural, based on cotton, corn, and alfalfa. Ostrich farms operated nearby in the 1910s to meet the demand for the plumes used in the period's women's headgear. With the rise in popularity of the automobile, this demand decreased, but the Ostrich Festival would continue to honor the legacy of the ostrich farms. In addition to the Arizona Railway Museum in Tumbleweed Park, the Chandler Center for the Arts, a 1,500-seat regional performing arts theater, and the Vision Gallery, a nonprofit fine arts gallery representing over 300 local artists in the Chandler area, are also located downtown. In Chandler, a 70,000 square foot (6,500 square meter) Holocaust and Tolerance Museum is planned.

The town of Chandler is home to a large number of buildings that are regarded as historical and are either designated as such by the Chandler Historical Society or on the National Register of Historic Places. The Price-Propstra family gave the 1938 Pueblo Revival-style house known as the Historic McCullough-Price House to the city in 2001. In 2007, the city finished the renovations and let people use it. The McCullough-Price House was officially included on the National Register of Historic Places on June 12, 2009, a list of the nation's most important historic and cultural sites. The building, located at 300 S. Chandler Village Dr., southwest of Chandler Fashion Center, is run by the city of Chandler.

Recreation and Parks

Chandler was named a 2016 Playful City USA neighborhood on May 18, 2016, by a national nonprofit parks and recreation advocacy group with headquarters in Washington, D.C. This was the tenth year running that Chandler had received the accolade (one of twelve founding U.S. cities to receive the honor for the tenth consecutive year since the program was initiated in 2007). With its numerous recreational facilities, parks, and aquatic facilities, Chandler was commended for adopting an innovative strategy to prioritize play throughout the city.

Office of Community Services

The Chandler Community Services Department offers workshops, programs, special events, fitness, cultural, artistic, and educational opportunities to residents and tourists in a number of ways. In Old Downtown Chandler, the Community Services Department manages the community center, senior center, numerous neighborhood and community parks, two recreation centers, and six aquatic facilities

Chandler offers a variety of sports, activities, and special events that residents and visitors of all ages, interests, and abilities can take part in. A free subscription service is available to residents, and the Department publishes a quarterly recreation magazine called Break Time that is distributed at various City facilities.

Swim lessons, junior tennis clinics and leagues, youth classes and programs, youth sports, after-school teen programs, summer youth sports camps and arts camps, fitness classes, group aerobics, and dance classes, nature and sustainable living courses, adult classes, sports leagues, and outdoor recreation programs, active adult activities, and therapeutic activities are just a few examples of the programs provided by the Community Services Department and its Parks and Recreation Divisions.

The annual Ostrich Festival, the Fourth of July Fireworks Festival, and the sixth annual Day of Play, which drew more than 5,000 attendees on Saturday, October 27, 2012, are just a few of the activities that take place at Chandler's regional Tumbleweed Park throughout the year

With a height of 1,311 feet, the city's highest point is located in Veterans Oasis Park (400 m).
