NEWTON, Iowa - - It's what NASCAR fans have actually been awaiting all week in Iowa. History was made Sunday in Newton as the Iowa Speedway hosted its first-ever cup race series in front of a sold-out crowd.
Ryan Blaney took the checkered flag in the inaugural Iowa Corn 350..
" Pretty cool to come here and figure it out through the weekend and deal with our guys. Honestly, I didn't believe we were great Friday and we got tons much better just going to work which is something to be proud of," stated Blaney.
The race wasn't a washout, as Kyle Larson held the lead in the start, but Blaney took the lead to win the opening phase. Larson returns to win the second stage. Right at the start of the last phase Larson spun out, requiring him to head back to the garage.
For Blaney, the win was made even sweeter, as his mother is from Iowa, and he had lots of family and friends members cheering him on in the crowd.
Blaney stated, "I'm extremely fortunate I got household like this. Come out and support me all night which is all you can ask for.".
Blaney has won at Iowa before, first in 2012 for the truck series and after that 2015 for Xfinity, now completing the trifecta with a cup win.
" It's quite neat, I indicate it's cool to win at the exact same track in 3 different series. This location is way various than what it was 9 years ago when I ran here before, stated Blaney.".
Furthermore, Blaney gets his very first win of the season, securing his area in the playoffs.
And now seals himself in Iowa Speedway history.
It's a night NASCAR fans and Iowans will never forget, as the very first cup race here at the Iowa Speedway is officially in the books.
