A Long Island City man has been convicted for a horrifying subway attack that left a victim with a fractured skull after being struck repeatedly with a hammer. The shocking assault, which unfolded in broad daylight, highlights the ongoing concerns over subway safety in New York City.
The incident occurred on November 25, 2022, inside the 21st Street-Queensbridge subway station. Prosecutors revealed that the assailant, identified as Malik Jackson, ambushed his 43-year-old victim without warning, striking him multiple times in the head with a hammer. The brutal attack left the victim with severe injuries, including a fractured skull.
Following a trial, a Queens jury found Jackson guilty of assault in the first degree and criminal possession of a weapon. He now faces up to 25 years in prison when sentenced later this year. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz praised the conviction, stating, "This was a vicious, unprovoked attack that could have easily been fatal. The jury’s verdict ensures this violent offender is held accountable."
This case adds to growing fears over crime in New York's transit system. While major felonies in subways have dipped slightly compared to last year, high-profile attacks continue to undermine public confidence. Recent measures, including increased police patrols and mental health outreach, have yet to fully reassure commuters.
