California's bear population is waking up for spring

(FOX40.COM) - - Even as more snow falls throughout the Sierra Nevada, California's bears are starting to emerge from their winter sleep and they are starving.

The BEAR League shared a light-hearted message on behalf of the Lake Tahoe area's bear population to notify people to their return from hibernation.

"All of us guys are up and out, snow or no snow, and while we wait for the meadows to melt and get green we'll be searching for food anywhere we can ... and that suggests in your neighborhoods, around your homes and in your automobiles," the BEAR League wrote on behalf of Bernardo, the West Shore Papa Bear.

The BEAR League also said that if a bear can smell your food, they can discover it and will look for it.

According to the Forest Service, there are in between 25,000 to 35,000 black bears in California and there are countless bear sighting reports every year.
