In a groundbreaking move, CalOptima Health has expanded its Street Medicine Program to provide critical healthcare services to Santa Ana’s unhoused residents. This initiative is a lifeline for those who face barriers to accessing traditional medical care, offering hope and healing where it’s needed most.
The Street Medicine Program is a mobile healthcare service designed to bring medical care directly to individuals experiencing homelessness. By meeting people where they are, this program eliminates the obstacles of transportation, cost, and stigma that often prevent unhoused individuals from seeking help.
Santa Ana has one of the highest populations of unhoused individuals in Orange County. The city’s central location and dense urban environment make it a critical area for addressing homelessness and healthcare disparities. By expanding the Street Medicine Program here, CalOptima Health aims to reduce emergency room visits and hospitalizations, ultimately saving taxpayer dollars while improving lives.
The program operates through a fleet of specially equipped vehicles that travel to encampments, shelters, and other areas where unhoused individuals gather. Teams of doctors, nurses, and social workers assess needs, provide treatment, and connect patients to additional resources like housing assistance and substance abuse programs.
This expansion is part of CalOptima Health’s broader mission to address health inequities in Orange County. By focusing on the most vulnerable populations, the organization is setting a precedent for how healthcare systems can adapt to meet the needs of their communities.
CalOptima Health plans to continue scaling the program, with hopes of reaching even more underserved areas. The ultimate goal is to create a model that can be replicated in other cities facing similar challenges.
