DILLON BEACH, CA – A spirit of camaraderie and adventure filled the salty air at Lawson’s Landing Campground this weekend as campers from all over Northern California gathered for a crab fishing bonanza. With traps, nets, and high hopes, hundreds of outdoor enthusiasts lined the docks and launched boats into Tomales Bay, all in pursuit of the coveted Dungeness and rock crabs.
For many, the event was more than just about the catch—it was about tradition and community. Families and friends huddled around campfires, swapping fishing stories, cooking fresh seafood, and sharing tips on the best bait and trap placement.
“We’ve been coming here for years, and it just keeps getting better,” said Mike Sanders, a longtime camper and avid crabber. “There’s nothing like pulling up a full trap and then cooking it right on the beach with your crew.”
Lawson’s Landing, a historic fishing and camping destination, has long been a hotspot for outdoor recreation, but the annual crab season draws an especially enthusiastic crowd. This year, campers reported strong hauls, with many pulling in limit catches by midday.
The gathering wasn’t just about fishing—local seafood vendors, tackle shops, and Lawson’s Landing staff helped newcomers with gear rentals and crabbing tutorials. First-time camper and angler Jessica Ruiz was thrilled by the experience. “I had no idea how fun this would be! I caught my first crab today, and now I’m hooked—literally!” she said with a laugh.
With California’s Dungeness crab season now in full swing, the event served as a kickoff to months of fishing, feasting, and fellowship at one of the state’s most beloved coastal retreats. As the sun set over Tomales Bay, the laughter of campers echoed across the shoreline, proving once again that crabbing at Lawson’s Landing is about more than just the catch—it’s about the people who share the experience.
