In the wake of Hurricane Helene, a staggering loss has been felt across North Carolina. With over 90 confirmed fatalities linked to the storm, including 30 in Buncombe County alone, the devastation is heart-wrenching. Communities like Chimney Rock, located about 110 miles northwest of Charlotte, have reported destruction that locals describe as "worse than you can ever imagine."
Chimney Rock has been hit particularly hard. Local restaurant owner George Carter shared his experiences, stating, "There’s mud everywhere. Buildings are gone. Streets are gone. Homes are completely gone or damaged." Reports suggest that as much as 40% of Chimney Rock remains intact, but those structures are now filled with mud and debris.
Emergency officials in Rutherford County faced significant challenges as they monitored the Lake Lure dam, which at one point appeared to be at risk of failing. Fortunately, the dam remained intact, although some erosion was noted due to the heavy rainfall.
Governor Cooper warned that the death toll is likely to rise as rescue teams reach isolated communities cut off by washed-out roads and bridges. Many residents in areas like Avery County have reported being unable to contact loved ones since the storm struck.
Organizations like the American Red Cross are stepping in to aid those affected by the hurricane. Donations can make a significant difference in the recovery efforts. A special web page has been launched for those wishing to contribute financially, allowing for monetary donations via credit card or PayPal.
The path to recovery will be long and challenging, requiring the support of local, state, and federal resources. As the community begins to assess the damage and plan for rebuilding, the resilience of the people will undoubtedly shine through.
