After initially rejecting a proposal to enhance Oakland’s Public Ethics Commission, the City Council took a surprising turn and decided to bring it back to life. The council voted 5-2 last week to place a measure on the November ballot aimed at improving the commission, which plays a crucial role in enforcing Oakland’s rules regarding campaign finance, government transparency, and lobbying.
The proposed changes, the first significant updates since 2014, include tightening rules for gift-giving by lobbyists and adding an additional investigator to the commission’s staff by 2026. Voters will have the opportunity to vote on these changes on Nov. 5.
