In the vibrant world of craft brewing, coffee-infused beers have carved out a niche of their own. This intriguing fusion captivates the palate and offers a delightful experience for both coffee and beer enthusiasts. Today, we delve into the creative process behind Lower Left Brewing's latest seasonal offering, the Origin Story, and the exciting new coffee selection that's stirring up anticipation.
Alex Shoenthal, the co-founder and head brewer at Lower Left Brewing, is on a mission. For the past three years, he has crafted the Origin Story, a New England IPA that celebrates the union of coffee and beer. This year's adventure leads him to a unique single-origin coffee from China, which he excitedly describes as “sun-dried” and “unroasted.” He believes this coffee could add an unprecedented twist to his beloved brew.
On a sultry July morning, before the brewery opens, Shoenthal prepares to taste the coffee first-hand. He brews a cup using a French press and pours two tasting glasses. The coffee, named Guiben from Yunnan province, boasts flavors of “pink lemonade, strawberry candy, and chocolate malt.” The light, cloudy caramel color of the brew matches the unique hue of the beans, hinting at an extraordinary flavor journey ahead.
After savoring the coffee, Shoenthal notes, “I can really taste the strawberry,” highlighting the exciting potential this coffee could bring to the Origin Story. He explains that the coffee's acidity will enhance the overall flavor profile of the IPA, much like adding salt to a dish.
However, the brewing world is unpredictable. Just weeks after our tasting, Shoenthal reaches out with an update—while the Guiben coffee was delightful, it lacked the robust coffee flavor he desired for the Origin Story. Instead, he has opted for a bolder bean, the Finca Rosita from Bolivia, which promises notes of peanut butter and graham cracker.
Shoenthal plans to brew the Origin Story in August, followed by another coffee beer, Blix, an oatmeal stout infused with a Night Swim dark roast, in October. These offerings will join a growing trend among Charlotte-area breweries, especially during the colder months when coffee beers become especially popular.
ABV: 5.8% - A classic blend of coffee and vanilla, this beer has become a seasonal favorite.
ABV: 5.3% - A sessionable stout brewed in collaboration with Counter Culture Coffee.
ABV: 5% - A lighter coffee beer designed to let the coffee shine, honoring the playful spirit of its namesake.
As the craft brewing scene continues to evolve, the marriage of coffee and beer remains an exciting frontier. Lower Left Brewing's commitment to exploring unique flavors keeps the community buzzing with anticipation for their upcoming releases.
