Cops provide safety pointers after burglars burglarize Newport Beach home

2 intruders smashed through a moving glass door and ransacked a home in the Broadmoor Sea View Community of Newport Beach Wednesday night, and authorities are using the opportunity to provide tips for keeping your home safe.

The robbers used a hillside behind the home in the 1900 block of Yacht Colonia to enter the backyard, where they smashed the moving glass door at about 9 p.m., the Newport Beach Police Department said in a press release.

When inside, the burglars "searched through drawers in the master bedroom before running away the scene," police stated.

The robbery was reported the next early morning, though what was taken is "unknown at this time."

The 2 burglars used dark clothes, hoodies and masks, and one of them had a knapsack.

Cops provided numerous suggestions for keeping your home and neighborhood safe:

  • Always lock your doors and windows when you go out, even if for just a couple of minutes. 2nd story windows and doors need to be protected as if they were on the first story.

  • Use timers on indoor lamps to give the appearance that you are home. Leave a tv or a radio on in the home if you're going out for the night.

  • If your home is geared up with an alarm, always activate it, even if you're just going out for a brief walk.

  • Always keep your front and rear deck lights on from sunset to dawn and usage movement detector lighting along the sides of your home or areas with little foot traffic.

  • If you return home and find your door locked and you are certain that you left it opened, do not go within; rather call 911 immediately. Burglars typically lock this door to slow down a victim, allowing the intruder extra time to leave the home before the resident gets in.

  • When you leave on getaway, keep in mind to call the Police Department for a Vacation Check at 949-644-3681. Also, ask a trusted friend or next-door neighbor to pick up your paper and mail while you are away.

  • If you see suspicious activity within your neighborhood (specifically at a home where you know your neighbors are on holiday, have actually gone out for the night, or their home is for sale), please call the Newport Beach Police Department right away at 949-644-3717.
