VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – A fast-moving fire tore through a Virginia Beach home early Tuesday morning, leaving two residents and their cat displaced. Firefighters battled the blaze on Wilmington Court, managing to rescue the family pet in a dramatic operation.
The fire erupted just before dawn, with flames consuming much of the single-family home before crews arrived. Neighbors reported hearing smoke alarms and seeing thick black smoke billowing from the roof.
Firefighters arrived within minutes but faced intense heat and thick smoke. As crews worked to contain the flames, a bystander alerted them to the family cat still trapped inside. Wearing oxygen masks, a team entered the burning structure and emerged moments later with the terrified feline.
"That cat means everything to them—it's like their child," said neighbor Rebecca Simmons. "We're just grateful everyone got out alive."
The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents with temporary housing. Preliminary assessments suggest the home may be a total loss, with damage estimates exceeding $200,000.
