Over $5 Million Worth of Methamphetamine Disguised as Watermelons Seized at Otay Mesa

In a shocking turn of events, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers made a significant drug bust at the Otay Mesa Commercial Facility, uncovering over $5 million worth of methamphetamine hidden within a shipment of watermelons. This incident, which took place last Friday, highlights the ongoing battle against sophisticated drug smuggling methods.

The Discovery: A Routine Inspection Turns into a Major Seizure

It all began when a 29-year-old man attempted to enter the United States from Mexico, driving a commercial tractor-trailer laden with watermelons. CBP officers, suspecting something unusual, referred the driver and his cargo for a secondary inspection. What they discovered next was beyond anyone's imagination.

  • Secondary Inspection: The watermelon shipment was offloaded for thorough examination.
  • Uncovering the Contraband: Officers found 1,220 packages, each meticulously wrapped in paper, disguised as watermelons.
  • Weight and Value: The seized methamphetamine weighed a staggering 4,587 pounds, with an estimated street value exceeding $5 million.

Upon confirming the contents of the packages as methamphetamine, the CBP officers seized the narcotics and the commercial vehicle. The driver was subsequently handed over to Homeland Security Investigations for further questioning.

Operation Apollo: A Strategic Counter-Fentanyl Initiative

This monumental seizure is part of Operation Apollo, a comprehensive counter-fentanyl effort that commenced on October 26, 2023, in Southern California. The operation has since expanded into Arizona, focusing on:

  1. Intelligence Gathering: Collaborating with various agencies to enhance the effectiveness of operations.
  2. Partnership Development: Strengthening ties with federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial partners to tackle drug smuggling.
  3. Resource Allocation: Boosting resources to combat the ever-evolving methods used by drug cartels.

Rosa E. Hernandez, the Port Director for the Area Port of Otay Mesa, expressed her pride in the team's exceptional efforts. She emphasized the importance of adapting strategies to counteract the evolving smuggling techniques of drug cartels.

The Bigger Picture: Protecting America’s Borders

U.S. Customs and Border Protection serves as America's frontline defense, with over 65,000 personnel dedicated to protecting the nation. The agency plays a vital role in facilitating lawful travel and trade while ensuring the safety and security of American citizens through innovative practices and strong collaborative efforts.
