Baltimore, MD – In a shocking case of mistaken identity, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident, was unlawfully deported to El Salvador—a country he hadn’t visited since childhood. Now, Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) is demanding answers after meeting with Abrego Garcia in a high-stakes confrontation with immigration authorities.
"This was an inexcusable failure," Van Hollen declared. "An innocent man was sent to a country where his life was in danger—all because of bureaucratic negligence."
Abrego Garcia, a lawful U.S. resident, was detained in 2023 after a minor traffic violation. Instead of being released, ICE agents mistakenly identified him as a fugitive with a similar name. Despite his protests, he was flown to El Salvador—where gangs immediately targeted him, knowing he was a deportee.
After Abrego Garcia’s family reached out, Van Hollen personally traveled to El Salvador to secure his return. The senator is now pushing for:
Abrego Garcia described weeks of hiding in safe houses while gang members hunted deportees. "They assumed I was a criminal," he said. "I had no money, no way to prove who I was. If not for the senator, I’d still be there—or dead."
Advocacy groups warn that Abrego Garcia’s case isn’t isolated. Since 2021, at least 12 similar wrongful deportations have been reported, yet ICE has not implemented stricter verification measures.
