In a startling turn of events at a recent rally in the Coachella Valley, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco revealed that authorities may have thwarted a potential assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump. This dramatic incident unfolded when a 49-year-old man from Las Vegas was apprehended with a loaded firearm and a high-capacity magazine just before the event commenced.
Deputies stationed at a checkpoint near the intersection of Avenue 52 and Celebration Drive made contact with the driver of a black SUV shortly before 5 p.m. on Saturday. The individual, later identified as Vem Miller, was found in possession of:
Miller was arrested and subsequently booked at the John J. Benoit Detention Center, facing charges related to illegal firearm possession. After posting a $5,000 bail, he is set to appear at the Indio Larson Justice Center on January 2.
During a press conference, Sheriff Bianco explained that deputies had established multiple security perimeters around the rally venue. It was during a secondary checkpoint, about a quarter-mile from the entrance, that deputies noticed Miller's vehicle was in disarray, sporting a fake license plate. They discovered he had multiple fake passports and driver licenses with various names.
Bianco expressed serious concerns, stating, "We probably stopped another assassination attempt," despite Miller's claims that he intended no harm. The sheriff emphasized that the weapons found were unregistered, and Miller possessed ample ammunition for both guns.
In an interview with the Southern California News Group, Vem Miller insisted he was merely at the rally to show support for Trump and claimed the firearms were for his protection. He stated:
"I’m an artist; I’m the last person that would cause any violence and harm to anybody."
However, Miller's affiliation with the Sovereign Citizens movement, which rejects government regulations, raised further red flags for law enforcement. This connection added to the suspicion surrounding his intentions at the rally.
Authorities, including the U.S. Attorney's Office and the FBI, are currently evaluating the situation. Bianco mentioned that the incident did not compromise Trump’s safety or that of the rally attendees, and they are collaborating with the Secret Service for further investigations.
Despite Miller's claims of innocence and his Republican affiliations, the sheriff remained skeptical, stating, "We know that we prevented something bad from happening, and it’s irrelevant what that bad was going to be."
As of now, former President Trump has not commented on the arrest but shared a post on X, expressing gratitude for a "beautiful evening in Coachella, California." This incident follows a series of security threats against Trump, including a shooting at a rally earlier this year.
