At age 12, Tom Irwin, later known as “Shotgun” Tom Kelly, was given a lesson in reading and writing by Sister Mario at St. John of the Cross Catholic School. Despite this early academic challenge, Irwin had already set his sights on a career in radio at the age of 10, creating his own radio station in his bedroom.
Years later, “Shotgun” Tom Kelly released his memoir, “All I Wanna Do Is Play The Hits.” In this book, Irwin shares stories from his time in the radio industry in the 60s and 70s, as well as humorous anecdotes from his life outside of radio. The memoir is a delightful read for anyone, not just radio enthusiasts.
After a 50-year career, Irwin remains a prominent figure in the industry, working as an afternoon DJ on SiriusXM 60s Gold. Known for his booming voice and iconic ranger hat, Irwin has received numerous accolades, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and two Emmy awards.
Irwin’s journey began in San Diego, where he worked at various radio stations before making his mark in Los Angeles. He hosted shows for children on television before transitioning to radio, where he became a beloved host.
Irwin’s memoir was a labor of love, written over five years with the help of friends like Thomas K. Arnold. The book offers a glimpse into Irwin’s life, including personal struggles and heartwarming moments.
One memorable chapter recounts Irwin’s encounter with President Reagan, a tale filled with humor and heart. The book also features QR codes that link to video clips, adding an interactive element to the reading experience.
