Have you ever dreamed of strumming a guitar or beating a drum, but thought you just weren't musical enough? You're not alone! A year ago, I found myself in a similar situation, helping my friend Matrisha Armitage craft a business plan for her nonprofit, the Music Education & Performing Artists Association (MEPAA) in Eugene. Little did I know, this experience would lead me to rediscover the joy of music in a way I never expected!
Having watched my youngest child thrive in the MEPAA program, I was intrigued to delve deeper. I decided to take weekly guitar lessons and participate in family jam sessions. The lessons taught me a lot, but I quickly realized that guitar might not be my forte!
However, the family jams—officially dubbed the “Music Exploration Workshop for Families” on MEPAA’s website—were an entirely different experience. No prior musical experience? No problem! Just show up at 1:30 PM on the second Sunday of each month, and you'll be embraced by a community eager to make music together.
With the support of MEPAA's music mentors—my now-adult children included—the group collaborates to learn and perform both an acoustic and an electric song. There’s something truly magical about being in a room filled with people, all strangers at first, yet united in the rhythm of shared creativity. The energy is infectious, and the sound? Simply amazing!
The Family Jam takes place from 1:30 PM to 3 PM on the second Sunday of each month at the MEPAA Music & Art Center, located at 2370 Parliament Street. While a suggested donation of $5 to $10 is appreciated, it’s not mandatory. For more information, visit mepaa.org or call 541-246-8082.
Let's spark a conversation! Your thoughts matter, and we want to hear from you.
