In a rally that electrified his base, former President Donald Trump turned his sights on Americorps, branding the federal volunteer program as "another bloated government scheme." The comments, made during a campaign stop in Colorado, have reignited discussions about fiscal responsibility and the role of national service initiatives.
Established in 1993, Americorps is a national service program that places volunteers in communities to address pressing needs like education, disaster relief, and environmental conservation. Participants receive modest stipends and educational benefits in exchange for their service.
The attack comes as Congress debates reauthorization funding for the program. Supporters argue Americorps provides critical services at minimal cost, while critics claim it's an inefficient use of taxpayer dollars.
"This is exactly the kind of wasteful spending we need to eliminate," said Colorado GOP chair Dave Williams. Meanwhile, Americorps alumni flooded social media with stories of how the program transformed their lives and communities.
