The Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) has recognized the Donna ISD school board as one of five 2024 Honor School Boards, positioning them as contenders for the prestigious title of Texas Outstanding School Board.
The Donna ISD school board for the 2023-24 academic year is led by President Fernando Castillo, Vice President Jose Rogelio Reyna, Secretary Ida M. Garcia, and members Eloy Avila, Jose L. Valdez, Dr. Maricela Valdez, and Eva Castillo Watts.
The selection committee for the honor boards evaluated various criteria, including support for educational performance, commitment to educational improvement projects, adherence to a code of ethics, and fostering positive relationships among board members before choosing the finalists.
Superintendent Angela Dominguez expressed her pride in the trustees, highlighting the dedication and time they invest in their unpaid roles, which often go unnoticed.
This recognition marks the board's second nomination for a state award, having previously been named state finalists for the 2024 H-E-B Excellence in Education Outstanding School Board Award.
The board was also honored as the 2024 Outstanding School Board of the Year by the Region One Education Center, a testament to their collaborative efforts and unified vision for student success.
Despite occasional disagreements, board members and Superintendent Dominguez work together towards achieving the best outcomes for students, which has made a significant impact on the district.
