It was like fusion.
Here in Pomona, Chef Mendoza and his team are serving Mexican-style sushi.
They provide your traditional raw sushi rolls, but here you'& #x 27; ll wish to attempt your house specializeds.
Like the "" Tocino Roll"", meaning bacon in Spanish.
Rice, shrimp, cream cheese, avocado rolled up and covered in bacon.
A drizzle of special house made sauces, some grilled onions, and a yellow chili pepper completes the meal.
The sushi is unique, no doubt.
And it is Chef Mendoza'& #x 27; s own story that & #x 27; s formed El Sushi Loco into the dining establishment it is today.
"" When I was in jail I had lost it all. I was broke. I got 11 years in prison, truly so. Rightfully so. And I had time to believe, what am I going to make with my life?"" he said.
After serving time for a drug conviction Chef Mendoza went to work with his nephew making sushi in Mexico.
He chose he wanted to produce a brand-new sushi idea back in his home of East Los Angeles.
"" I went onto Craigslist and I discovered this cart, it looked like a hotdog cart."".
It all began in 2010 with the cart, which he bought for $1,500, his whole life cost savings.
Chef Mendoza sold his sushi on sidewalks throughout La Puente.
"" We started to blend carne asada, chicken, filet and shrimp marinaded with even our soy sauce,"" he said.
We dug in, whatever from sushi rolls, to octopus, shrimp, a tasty fried rice, and oyster shots.
"The American dream is alive and well. Today 2023, it is alive and it is well.
Chef Mendoza aspires to become a Michelin Star chef from East LA
. You can find El Sushi Loco in La Puente, Downey and Pomona.
