A heartbreaking pedestrian accident in northeast Charlotte has left the community shaken. A 58-year-old man lost his life after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the street, raising urgent questions about pedestrian safety in the area.
The accident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Monday night along North Tryon Street near Plaza Road Extension. According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police:

The victim's identity hasn't been released pending family notification, but neighbors are already demanding change. "This could have been any of us," said nearby resident Maria Gonzalez. "We've been asking for better lighting and crosswalks here for years."
City transportation officials acknowledged receipt of multiple safety complaints about this stretch of North Tryon Street in recent months. A planned pedestrian safety project for the area isn't scheduled to begin until late 2024.
