In a groundbreaking initiative, the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District has launched the PSJA Family Shop, a unique gift shop designed to empower special needs students by providing them with real-world job training. Opened on October 18, 2024, this innovative store not only serves as a retail outlet but also as a vital training ground for students aged 18-21 enrolled in the Pathways Toward Independence (PTI) and LIFE programs.
The PSJA Family Shop is a testament to the district's commitment to fostering independence and employability among students with special needs. The shop offers a hands-on experience in retail management, allowing students to develop essential skills that can lead to future employment. According to Sarah Gonzalez, a PTI teacher and store manager, “Most students with disabilities are not able to go to college, so employment is the goal.”
Edgar Vargas, a PTI student, shares his enthusiasm about the opportunity to work in the shop, stating, “I just never expected years later that this would ever happen. I always thought I was just going to be an ordinary person, stuck at home doing nothing.” Vargas, who is autistic, embodies the spirit of self-expression and creativity, proving that with the right support, any student can thrive.
The PSJA Family Shop is not just a place for students to work; it is a community hub. Approximately 95% of the items sold are crafted by the students themselves, from T-shirts to seasonal products. By learning to create these items, students are gaining valuable skills that will serve them in future job opportunities.
Gonzalez emphasizes the importance of teamwork: “They have a piece of my heart. I love them all, and I believe in them. I treat them like young adults.” This positive reinforcement encourages students to strive for personal and professional growth.
Located at 201 S. Gumwood St. in Pharr, the PSJA Family Shop is open Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The shop is a testament to what can be achieved when a community supports its special needs population.
