In an inspiring move to combat childhood hunger, Feeding San Diego held its inaugural School Pantry Program event at Hancock Elementary in Tierrasanta, providing essential food supplies to 150 families in need. This initiative is not just about food; it represents hope and support for families facing tough times.
The School Pantry Program is a collaborative effort between Feeding San Diego and local educational institutions. It aims to alleviate food insecurity by distributing nutritious food items to families on a bi-monthly basis. Here’s what you need to know:
“We are providing a service to those who are serving our country,” said Abigail Avila, community schools coordinator at Hancock Elementary. “These families are often on a fixed income, and living in San Diego, one of the most expensive cities in the U.S., makes it even harder.”
The need for such programs is evident, as Hancock Elementary is among over 20 schools in San Diego County currently on the waitlist for Feeding San Diego’s assistance.
Child hunger does not merely affect meals; it has far-reaching implications for academic and physical well-being. According to Sam Duke, director of programs at Feeding San Diego:
Feeding San Diego is actively seeking community support through monetary donations to expand this vital program and help additional schools off the waitlist. Every contribution counts, and as Duke emphasizes, “Every donation makes a difference to kids and families experiencing food insecurity.”
