As the November 5 election looms, new voter surveys reveal a surge of support for Vice President Kamala Harris, particularly among voters of color in crucial swing states. With the race against Donald Trump deadlocked, the influence of marginalized communities could tip the scales in this pivotal election.
A duo of polls released this week highlights the growing enthusiasm for Harris among young voters:
Yadira Sanchez, co-founder of Poder Latinx, emphasizes the excitement within the Latino community, especially among young Latinas inspired by Harris's candidacy. Following her announcement in July, there has been a notable uptick in voter registration among these demographics.
Earlier surveys have revealed a significant gender gap in support, with 67% of female voters backing Harris compared to only 48% of males. Christine Chen, Executive Director of APIAVote, noted that the organizing efforts within the AAPI community are largely driven by young women, further boosting Harris's appeal among these groups.
The surveys also identified key issues that resonate with younger voters of color:
The results from this poll suggest that even slight changes in voter turnout could significantly impact the election outcome in battleground states. Harris's campaign may have benefitted from a historical moment, as many young voters are looking to her as a symbol of progress.
“Youth are not only mobilized but also critical in battleground states,” said Chen. “Their votes have the potential to swing critical races.”
As Election Day approaches, the enthusiasm among young voters of color will be essential for Harris's campaign. The shifts in sentiment and voter engagement could make all the difference in a race too close to call.
