At the recent City Council caucus, members discussed important work to be done at the city animal shelter, improvements to McGovern Park, and a new security program for special improvement districts (SIDs).
Plans are underway for replacing the animal shelter floor, with an emergency contract worth $20,000 to be finalized with K9dergarten. Chief Animal Control Officer Mark Byrnes mentioned that due to delays, work on the floor might start by Wednesday.
Byrnes highlighted the necessity of extra housing for animals due to the unstable shelter floor, ensuring the safety of both animals and employees.
Additionally, with the increased demand for animal services, temporary arrangements with Petserve are being made to accommodate more animals.
Infrastructure Director Barkha Patel shared the city’s expedited plans to replace the playground and repair the splash pad at McGovern Park, awaiting funding from New Jersey’s Joint Budget Oversight Committee. The estimated cost for these improvements is over $1 million.
Business Administrator John Metro mentioned that the council is likely to accept the funds soon, with Boyce Recreation taking charge of the project at 40 Sycamore Road.
Expanding police presence in special improvement districts is being considered, thanks to state funding aimed at boosting local economies. The proposed Off-Duty Police Project would involve 24 officers covering SIDs for six hours a day, funded at a rate of $55 per hour.
However, there have been challenges with this initiative, with concerns raised by council members and stakeholders about program management and clarity.
