A devastating incident occurred in Signal Hill on Sunday afternoon, resulting in the loss of two lives. A woman in her 70s and an 88-year-old man were killed when a driver struck their vehicle at high speed, as confirmed by authorities.
Signal Hill police stated that the driver responsible for the crash seemed to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. The tragic event took place on Cherry Avenue near Spring Street around 5:30 p.m. The driver rear-ended the other vehicle at a high rate of speed, causing it to collide with a tree, according to Lt. Kelli Crigler.
Both individuals in the vehicle that was hit tragically passed away at the scene. The man has been identified as Sheldon Turchin by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, while the woman has not yet been publicly identified.
Following the crash, officers arrested the driver, who displayed symptoms of intoxication. He was taken into custody on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, DUI causing injury, felony hit-and-run, and driving on a suspended or revoked license. Additionally, he had five warrants out for his arrest, though details about the warrants were not immediately available.
The driver was identified as Juan Pedro Fernandez Aguilar, 25 years old. He and his passenger sustained minor injuries in the collision, according to Crigler.
