Former President Donald Trump has reignited a heated debate after calling for Harvard University to lose its tax-exempt status. The Ivy League institution, long scrutinized for its massive endowment and elite reputation, now faces renewed scrutiny as critics question whether such schools deserve financial privileges.
Harvard, like many private universities, enjoys tax-exempt status under IRS Code Section 501(c)(3), which classifies it as a charitable organization. However, Trump and other critics argue that certain elite universities operate more like billion-dollar corporations than nonprofits.
Trump’s remarks tap into broader frustration over wealth inequality and institutional privilege. Supporters argue that stripping tax exemptions could force elite schools to redistribute wealth or lower costs. Opponents, however, warn that such a move could harm scholarship programs and research funding.
This isn’t just about Harvard—it's part of a growing backlash against elite institutions. Lawmakers in several states have already proposed taxing large university endowments. If momentum builds, other prestigious schools could face similar pressure.
