After an extended wait of over a year, Fort Worth is set to transform its streets with a brand new fleet of street sweepers. This eagerly anticipated addition not only replaces the city's two aging sweepers but also introduces ten additional vehicles to tackle the rising litter problem amidst the city's rapid growth.
Officials are eager to implement a regular cleaning schedule with these new machines, emphasizing the city's commitment to maintaining a clean environment. Environmental Services Director Cody Whittenburg stated, "Our goal is to create and maintain a clean and attractive city, and street sweepers are critical to achieving that goal. Not only do they pick up litter, but they also collect fine debris, preventing it from entering our storm drains and waterways."
This ambitious project was made possible by a $3.5 million investment in the spring of 2023. Alongside this purchase, Fort Worth also adjusted its monthly environmental fee from 50 cents to $1.50 for residents—a necessary change after 26 years to enhance funding for cleanup initiatives.
Since 2019, concerns over litter have surged among residents, prompting city officials to take decisive measures. The establishment of the Environmental Services Department, the deployment of cleanup crews, and a new program to clear trash from highways are all part of the city's proactive approach. Additionally, a partnership with the Tarrant Regional Water District is underway to create a water wheel that will remove thousands of pounds of trash from the Trinity River daily.
The newly acquired fleet is already making a difference. With the ability to clean approximately 6,380 street miles per month, the new sweepers vastly outperform the previous two vehicles, which managed only 580 miles monthly. The fleet currently employs 13 operators, who are undergoing extensive training with the vehicles’ manufacturer, TYMCO.
In a fun twist, Fort Worth is inviting residents to participate in naming the new sweepers. City officials are hosting a contest, allowing community members to submit up to three name suggestions each. This initiative not only builds awareness about the importance of street cleaning but also fosters community engagement.
As Fort Worth's new street sweepers hit the roads, residents can expect a significant enhancement in local cleanliness. The city is committed to ensuring that its streets remain welcoming and attractive, setting a standard for urban environmental responsibility.
