California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a stern warning to local governments on Thursday, threatening to withhold state funding next year if they do not take immediate action to clean up homeless encampments.
Newsom, standing in front of a cleared homeless encampment in Los Angeles, made it clear that he expects to see tangible results in moving people out of encampments and into shelters. He emphasized that he wants to see action, not just promises or data.
This announcement is part of Newsom's efforts to pressure local governments into more aggressive action against homeless encampments. Last month, he ordered state agencies to start clearing encampments on state land and urged local governments to do the same.
The Governor's actions come after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a ruling that prevented governments from clearing encampments when shelter beds were not available. Newsom's administration argues that previous legal barriers have hindered the state's ability to address the homeless crisis effectively.
Newsom has a history of challenging local governments over their handling of homelessness. In the past, he has threatened to withhold funding and has actually clawed back grants from cities and counties that he felt were not making sufficient progress.
While San Francisco's mayor has taken aggressive steps to clear encampments, others, like Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and LA County officials, have expressed doubts about Newsom's approach. Some have argued that a more compassionate and long-term solution is needed.
The California State Association of Counties has refrained from commenting directly on Newsom's latest threat but has expressed a willingness to work with the Governor to address the homelessness crisis.
