A Hammond teen, 16, has been charged as an adult in Lake Superior Court after supposedly robbing a guy outside the Village Discount Outlet, then shooting a guy inside a neighboring dining establishment.
The Post-Tribune is not calling him, because he is a minor. He is being held at the Lake County Juvenile Detention Center on a $10,000 cash bond, records show.
Hammond Police reacted to the Village, 2706 165th Street, where the burglary victim stated he was awaiting his other half, when a young man approached him at 5:26 p.m. Nov. 22 holding 2 guns and demanding his wallet.
It had his license and company cards, the male said.
Minutes later, cops were called at 5:34 p.m. for a reported shooting inside the Latin Bliss dining establishment, 6247 Kennedy Avenue-- less than a half-mile north.
The man stated he was working by the front register, when a young man came in with two weapons and stated he desired money in the register. The 2 "exchanged words" and he punched the teen in the face. The teenager shot the male in the best leg, prior to taking off, court records reveal.
The shooting was off cam, according to the affidavit.
Authorities sent surveillance images to officers. A juvenile detective supplied 2 possible suspects from other criminal offenses.
The teenager was later on apprehended on an unassociated gun charge. He was among two and matched from a fingerprint on a soda can used by the supposed burglar at the dining establishment.
He was charged with attempted armed robbery, attempted robbery leading to bodily injury, armed robbery, all level 3 felonies; battery by means of a lethal weapon, intimidation, hazardous possession of a gun, all level 5 felonies; and two counts of pointing a gun, both level 6 felonies.
His next court hearing is Aug. 24 before Judge Natalie Bokota.
