Pittsburgh witnessed an electrifying performance as left-hander Bailey Falter nearly achieved a no-hitter, leading the Pirates to a 3-1 victory over the Miami Marlins on Wednesday afternoon. This win not only showcased Falter's exquisite pitching skills but also secured a sweep of the season series for the Pirates against the Marlins.
Falter, now 8-7 for the season, held the Marlins hitless until the seventh inning. Despite allowing three walks, he was in complete control, demonstrating remarkable focus and skill on the mound. The pivotal moment came when Jonah Bride broke the no-hit bid with a single to left field with one out in the seventh.
“I don’t really worry about that stuff,” Falter commented, reflecting on the pressure of the no-hit attempt. “My job is to go out there and put up zeroes and get those guys off the field as quickly as possible.”
Despite a rocky ninth inning, where David Bednar surrendered an RBI single to Cristian Pache, he managed to secure his tenth save with help from Jalen Beeks, who came in for the final out. Bednar’s recent struggles highlighted the need for consistency as the Pirates look to solidify their roster.
Pirates manager Derek Shelton expressed optimism about the team's progress, stating, “I think we’re getting better. We’re deeper than we have been in the last two years with our starting pitching.” The Pirates are poised to continue building on this momentum as they head into their next series.
For the Marlins, the loss marked their seventh straight defeat against the Pirates this season. Despite showing determination, they couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities. Manager Skip Schumaker noted, “We just couldn’t come up with the big hit late.”
The Marlins faced additional challenges when RHP John McMillon was pulled from the game due to tightness in his right forearm/elbow area after just two innings of play.
The Marlins will look to regroup as they face the Washington Nationals, while the Pirates prepare to take on the Kansas City Royals, with both teams eager to build on their recent performances.
