In a heartbreaking incident that has shaken the community, a Minnesota man has been sentenced to over 33 years in prison for the shocking act of killing his wife during a Bible study session. The case of Robert Castillo, 41, serves as a grim reminder of the dark realities of domestic violence.
Robert Castillo's life took a tragic turn on March 21, 2023, when he stabbed his wife, Corinna Woodhull, during what was supposed to be a peaceful gathering. The couple had been married for about two years and shared five children, aged between 11 and 24.
In a court hearing, Castillo expressed remorse for his actions, despite his attorney, Mark Austin, noting that Castillo had no memory of the incident due to a drug-induced state. He requested a lesser sentence of 25 years, emphasizing his regret.
“I’m taking full responsibility for my actions, even if I don’t recall anything that happened that day due to my … drug-induced psychosis,” Castillo stated in court.
Prosecutors revealed Castillo’s troubling history, which included eight prior felony convictions and a record of violent behavior. He was already on intensive supervised release at the time of the stabbing and was wanted for failing to appear in court for previous assault charges.
Woodhull's family had urged her not to marry Castillo, fearing for her safety. The prosecutor poignantly remarked, “I can’t believe that she knew her wedding vows would ultimately be her death sentence.” Tragically, Woodhull had even filed for divorce, indicating her awareness of the danger she was in.
In the wake of this tragedy, Linda Castle, Woodhull's mother, shared a powerful message about the importance of recognizing and rejecting abusive behavior:
“Women need to understand: Don’t accept this kind of behavior. It’s not OK.”
The sentencing of Robert Castillo serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent need to address and combat domestic violence. As communities come together to support victims, it is crucial to recognize the signs and take action to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
