PITTSBURGH — In a thrilling showdown on Monday night, the Pittsburgh Pirates narrowly defeated the Miami Marlins 3-2, thanks in large part to the remarkable performance of rookie pitcher Paul Skenes. With an impressive nine strikeouts over six innings, the 22-year-old phenom showcased why he’s quickly becoming a fan favorite and a contender for the National League Rookie of the Year.
Despite needing 98 pitches to secure 18 outs, Skenes managed to navigate through the game with poise, avoiding significant trouble and demonstrating his elite capabilities. Pirates manager Derek Shelton praised Skenes, stating, "This kid’s got elite stuff and he’s going to strike out a lot of people throughout his career."
While the Pirates have struggled as a team, particularly during a rough August that dimmed their postseason hopes, Skenes has emerged as a beacon of hope. His ability to adapt and improve, including leaning more on his "splinker" pitch—a hybrid of a sinker and splitter—has kept hitters guessing and off balance.
As Skenes exited the game, the modest crowd at PNC Park rose to their feet in appreciation, a testament to the excitement he brings to the team. Reflecting on the support, Skenes remarked, "That’s pretty dang cool every time. Just keep showing up for the games, and hopefully, I can keep giving them moments like that."
The Pirates are managing Skenes’ innings carefully as he completes his first full professional season. He has pitched a total of 147 1/3 innings across Triple-A and the majors, and while he acknowledges there might be a limit to his innings, he feels capable of handling the workload.
Despite the efforts from Marlins players like Xavier Edwards, Jesus Sanchez, and Otto Lopez, who each had two hits, it was not enough to overcome the Pirates' lead. Miami's defense also faltered, giving the Pirates crucial runs that proved pivotal in the close game.
The series continues on Tuesday night, with Adam Oller (1-2, 4.15 ERA) slated to pitch for the Marlins while the Pirates have yet to name their starter.
