Hopewell, VA – The Tri-Cities community came together in a powerful display of gratitude and remembrance as the Robert Penn Medal of Honor Monument was officially unveiled. The breathtaking tribute honors the bravery of Sgt. Robert Penn, a Black Union soldier who received the Medal of Honor for his courageous actions during the Civil War.
The ceremony, held on a sunlit morning, drew veterans, historians, and local leaders. The monument stands as a striking reminder of Penn's heroism, featuring a detailed bronze relief and an inspiring inscription detailing his valor. Penn, a member of the 4th U.S. Colored Cavalry, risked his life to save his regiment during a pivotal battle in 1864.
The monument’s placement at the Hopewell City Park ensures visibility for generations to come. Visitors can now reflect on Penn’s sacrifice while learning about the often-overlooked contributions of Black soldiers in the Civil War.
