Pedro Bravo, the man convicted of murdering University of Florida student Christian Aguilar in 2012, has died in prison. The Florida Department of Corrections confirmed his death, though the cause remains under investigation. Bravo, 35, was serving a life sentence for the murder that shocked the Gainesville community and made national headlines.
Christian Aguilar, an 18-year-old UF freshman, disappeared in September 2012. His body was later found in a remote area of Levy County after an extensive search. The case drew widespread attention due to its gruesome nature and the connection between Bravo and Aguilar.
Bravo and Aguilar had been friends in high school, but their relationship soured over a romantic rivalry. Bravo was reportedly infatuated with Erika Friman, Aguilar’s girlfriend, and became increasingly jealous of their relationship. This jealousy ultimately led to a deadly confrontation.
In 2014, Bravo was convicted of first-degree murder, kidnapping, and other charges. Prosecutors argued that Bravo lured Aguilar to his apartment, drugged him, and then strangled him. He later attempted to dispose of the body by burying it in a shallow grave. Bravo’s defense claimed the death was accidental, but the jury rejected this argument.
Bravo was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. His incarceration was marked by numerous disciplinary infractions, including attempts to escape and threats against prison staff.
The murder of Christian Aguilar left a lasting impact on the Gainesville community. Friends, family, and fellow students mourned the loss of a young man described as kind, ambitious, and full of potential. Aguilar’s parents, Carlos and Claudia, became advocates for missing persons and victims’ rights, using their tragedy to help others.
Bravo’s death has reignited conversations about the case, with many reflecting on the senselessness of the crime and the lives it forever changed.
With Bravo’s death, the legal chapter of this case has come to a close. However, the emotional scars remain for those who knew and loved Christian Aguilar. The Florida Department of Corrections is conducting an investigation into Bravo’s death, which is standard procedure for inmate fatalities.
