Introducing Harry Kamdar: The Visionary New CEO Transforming Asian Services in Action!

From Ketchup Sandwiches to Community Leadership: Harry Kamdar's Inspiring Journey

Harry Kamdar's story is one of resilience, compassion, and a commitment to uplift those around him. A new chapter has begun for him as he takes on the role of CEO at Asian Services in Action (ASIA), an organization dedicated to supporting the Asian American and Pacific Islander community in Northeast Ohio.

The Taste of Humble Beginnings

For Kamdar, the taste of pop diluted with water isn't just a preference; it's a reminder of his childhood in a struggling immigrant family in Columbus, Ohio. Growing up, he recalls the simplicity of life where even ketchup sandwiches were a common meal while cheering for Buckeye football. These memories shape his perspective on community service and empathy.

Bridging Cultures and Languages

After immigrating to the United States from Kenya in 1980, Kamdar faced the challenge of integrating into a new culture. He became the translator for his parents, helping them navigate banking systems and other essential services. At just 16, he took on a job at Kmart, where he contributed his earnings to support his family. This early experience instilled in him a strong work ethic and a deep understanding of the immigrant experience.

Lessons in Generosity

Kamdar's parents showed him the value of generosity, often sharing meals with anyone in need who knocked on their door. Even in difficult times, they made it a point to donate to others, a lesson that has profoundly influenced Kamdar's life choices. Their legacy continues to inspire his approach to leadership and community service.

A Vision for Change

Now at the helm of ASIA, Kamdar is armed with a vision to expand the organization's reach beyond its current locations in Akron and Cleveland. His goal is clear: to refine their model in Akron, elevate the Cleveland office, and replicate this success throughout Ohio and potentially beyond.

  • Community Engagement: Creating a welcoming environment for all immigrants.
  • Resource Expansion: Providing essential services to those who need them most.
  • Model Replication: Developing frameworks that can be adopted in various regions.

A Humanitarian Approach

Kamdar emphasizes that his leadership is not swayed by political affiliations. “The lens that I’m looking at things through is not a red lens, not a blue lens. It’s a clear lens with a humanitarian heart,” he states. This perspective is vital as he seeks to build a supportive community for immigrants from diverse backgrounds.

What Do You Think?

  • How can organizations better support immigrant communities in today’s society?
  • Do you think Kamdar's personal experiences make him a more effective leader?
  • Is it important for leaders to have a humanitarian approach in their work?
  • What role should local governments play in supporting immigrant services?
  • Should immigrant support organizations focus on specific ethnic communities or be more inclusive?
