Topgolf of Pharr is set to host a unique golf competition as part of the Special Olympics, joining 40 other sites worldwide in this inaugural event. Over 100 Special Olympians from Brownsville to Laredo will participate in the Unified Fore Joy Pro-Am on September 27, adding golf to the roster of 30 other sports already included in Special Olympics competitions throughout the year.
Lauro Garza, associate executive director of Special Olympics Texas South Region, expressed excitement about the event, stating, "Our region will have 25 teams competing in this worldwide event. Special Olympics plays a crucial role in providing extracurricular activities for special needs children, creating inclusive spaces where they feel welcome."
The Unified Fore Joy Pro-Am was officially announced at a kickoff event on August 1 at Rio Bank in McAllen, one of the event sponsors. Rio Bank CEO Ford Sasser shared his personal connection to Special Olympics, mentioning that his daughter has been competing in the organization for years.
McAllen Mayor Xavier Villalobos also showed his support for the event, emphasizing the collaborative effort between the city, school district, and private sector in promoting a special cause. Villalobos commended the community for coming together to support Special Olympics.
