In the vibrant fall of 2023, the University of Minnesota welcomed a new wave of fitness enthusiasts through the launch of its innovative Brains and Brawn club. This dynamic initiative was designed to not only welcome newcomers into the gym but to cultivate a thriving weightlifting community right on campus.
The club was founded by the ambitious duo of Kyle Cingi, President, and Sam Gundlach, Vice President. Starting from humble beginnings with just a handful of members, the club has blossomed over the past semester, attracting an impressive influx of 15 to 20 new faces during their weekly workouts held on Mondays and Wednesdays.
As Cingi notes, the club has evolved into a vibrant community with a dedicated team of officers who lead engaging weekly meetings at the University’s Recreation and Wellness Center. “These sessions are not just about lifting weights; they are about creating meaningful experiences for everyone involved,” he emphasizes. “We exchange tips and share our experiences, but ultimately, our aim is to foster connections among those who share a passion for fitness.”
Club Treasurer Alex Gherciuc sheds light on the mental health benefits of physical activity, especially for college students juggling classes, extracurriculars, and social lives. “Working out is a fantastic outlet for stress relief,” he explains. “After a long day of classes, I often arrive at our meetings feeling drained, but I leave feeling rejuvenated and alive.”
What makes the club even more special is its welcoming atmosphere for beginners. Gherciuc recalls his early days of lifting, highlighting the rewarding experience of guiding newcomers through their workouts. “When I joined, I had little experience, but being able to help others has been incredibly fulfilling,” he shares.
The Brains and Brawn club is not just about lifting weights; they aim to create a well-rounded experience for their members. Earlier this semester, the club hosted a successful meet and greet, complete with free Chipotle, to foster camaraderie among members. Looking ahead, they are excited about an upcoming collaboration with local gym Los Campeones, featuring an educational seminar led by bodybuilder and gym owner Benjamin Loehrer.
“This event will provide an opportunity for our members to explore weightlifting beyond the RecWell and connect with local fitness enthusiasts,” Cingi remarks. “We want it to be an enriching educational experience that empowers our community.”
For Gundlach, the sense of community at the club has been a game changer. “When I first started lifting, I found the gym intimidating,” he recalls. “Because fitness brought me so much joy, I wanted to create a space where others could feel that same sense of comfort and excitement.”
Through shared workouts led by knowledgeable officers, members can ease their nerves and enjoy a supportive environment that makes fitness fun.
