The Starlight Bowl, an iconic outdoor theater in Balboa Park, staged its final production in 2010 and has since been closed off and left to deteriorate.
But change may be on the horizon. The city of San Diego recently issued an official request for proposals to lease and renovate the 3,600-seat venue, with the intention of bringing it back to life as a hub for community events, outdoor performances, and presentations.
The unique design of the Starlight Bowl, characterized by its large plaster shell defining the stage area, dressing rooms, and storage spaces, presents an exciting opportunity for architects to blend its physical structures into the overall aesthetic of Balboa Park.
Mayor Todd Gloria expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, "Revitalizing the Starlight Bowl not only honors our past but also helps build a more dynamic future for Balboa Park."
Proposals for the renovation must include plans for the venue's operation, financial sustainability, and proposed enhancements. The selection process will involve a detailed review of experience and qualifications, financial capabilities, and a presentation of renovation plans.
Thanks to federal funding secured by Rep. Sara Jacobs, improvements to the Starlight Bowl's bathroom facilities and accessibility enhancements will be part of the revitalization project.
Constructed in 1935 by the Ford Motor Company, the Starlight Bowl has a rich history of hosting musical performances, choirs, and symphonies over the years. In 2018, the city entered into an agreement with the nonprofit organization Save Starlight to manage the amphitheater.
Interested parties have until November 14th to submit their renovation proposals, offering a chance to breathe new life into this historic San Diego landmark.
