A beloved STEM education program that has inspired thousands of Kansas students is now fighting for survival. The STARBASE program, which provides hands-on science and technology learning to fifth graders, faces an uncertain future after its teachers were abruptly placed on unpaid leave.
The program's troubles began when federal funding delays left teachers without paychecks. Despite assurances from state officials that funding would arrive, three STARBASE educators were placed on unpaid leave in late April. This move has sparked outrage among parents, educators, and STEM advocates across the state.
Local advocates have launched a Save STARBASE campaign, emphasizing the program's unique value:
State education officials maintain they are working to resolve the funding issue, but supporters worry about permanent damage to the program. "If we lose these experienced teachers now, we may never get them back," said one parent advocate.
The program's supporters are urging lawmakers to find a stopgap solution while long-term funding is secured. With testing season approaching, many worry students may miss out on this transformative educational experience.
