TOPEKA, Kan.-- Kansas' guv has actually signed legislation making it possible for the state to draw the Super Bowl champ Kansas City Chiefs and Major League Baseball's Royals away from neighboring Missouri. The measure signed Friday by Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly would help the teams spend for new stadiums by enabling Kansas to release bonds to cover 70% of a brand-new arena's cost. Kelly's action came 3 days after the Republican-led Legislature approved the strategy. It is an uncommonly fast turn-around that demonstrates how urgently Kansas officials want to move on the issue. Missouri officials argue it's still early in the conversations about the teams. The Kansas-Missouri border splits the 2.3 million-resident Kansas City location.
