In an electrifying clash at Veterans Stadium, the LA Force emerged victorious against Irvine Zeta FC, clinching their first-ever title in a nail-biting 4-3 penalty shootout. This momentous occasion marks a significant milestone for the third-division professional soccer team, which has just completed its inaugural year in Long Beach.
Over 1,400 passionate fans braved nearly three hours of anticipation to witness history unfold. The atmosphere was charged with energy as the LA Force lifted the National Independent Soccer Association trophy for the first time since joining the league five seasons ago.
The match kicked off with LA Force midfielder Josue Cartagena making an early impact, scoring in the 27th minute with a powerful left-footed shot that found its way past the Zeta goalkeeper.
However, the excitement didn’t stop there. In the second half, Zeta's forward George Almeida displayed incredible athleticism, leveling the score with a spectacular bicycle kick in the 55th minute.
With the score tied at 1-1, the tension escalated as both teams fought fiercely through the remaining regular time and two 15-minute overtime halves. The match ultimately progressed to a gripping five-kick penalty shootout.
The decisive moment arrived when Irvine's final penalty kick sailed wide to the left, igniting a wave of jubilation among the Force players, staff, and their loyal fans.
Cartagena reflected on the win, saying, “It means a lot to come here and win a championship for Long Beach.” The atmosphere was further enhanced by the presence of local businesses, including the Auld Dubliner serving refreshments and Port Long Beach showcasing their merchandise.
The community’s involvement was evident as families attended the match, with activities that engaged the younger fans. A special moment occurred when children had the chance to win Croc charms by demonstrating their soccer skills.
As the season wraps up, the team is already looking to the future. After playing at Veterans Stadium this season, LA Force aims to renew their contract with Long Beach City College, where they have enjoyed a fruitful partnership.
Club owner Bob Friedland expressed enthusiasm for continuing this relationship, hinting at exciting changes for next season, including new practice jerseys featuring the word “Beach.”
