HOUSTON (AP)-- Lamont Butler hit a jump shot at the buzzer, sending out San Diego State to its first national championship video game with a 72-71 win over fellow mid-major Florida Atlantic in the Last Four on Saturday night.
The Aztecs (32-6) appeared to be in difficulty as the free-flowing Owls (35-4) picked them apart while building a 14-point lead.
San Diego State got back in it, as it always does, with defense and rebounding.
The Aztecs shut down FAU and pulled within one when Jaedon LeDee hit a brief jumper with 36 seconds left. After FAU's Johnell Davis missed out on a contested layup, the Aztecs didn't call timeout and got the ball to Butler, a Riverside Poly graduate.
The clock ticking down, Butler dribbled to the baseline, discovered that cut off and circled around back. He went back to develop a little space and struck a jumper that sent out the Aztecs racing out onto the flooring-- and into Monday's championship game versus UConn or Miami.
