Limestone University, one of South Carolina's oldest higher education institutions, faces an existential threat as mounting financial pressures push it toward potential closure. Sources close to the administration reveal that without immediate intervention, the university may be forced to shutter its doors as early as next semester—a devastating blow to students, faculty, and the Gaffney community.
"This isn't just about balance sheets—it's about dreams being crushed," said Dr. Monica Pearce, a 20-year biology professor. Over 1,200 currently enrolled students face uncertain academic futures, while 340 faculty and staff members could lose their jobs in a region already struggling with employment opportunities.
Limestone's crisis mirrors struggles at dozens of small private colleges nationwide. Experts warn that without structural changes, more institutions will face similar fates—particularly those in rural areas without large donor networks.
