Look out for the "vacation notification" fraud

Look out for the "vacation notification" fraud

INDIANAPOLIS-- In the heart of summer getaway season, cyber security guard dogs are putting out a warning about a recurring scam designed to impersonate your company's Human Resources Department.

According to the writers at Scamicide, the HR Vacation Notification scam tends to come around this time of year, and around the winter vacations. You get an email from what looks like your company's HR department declaring there's an issue with the approaching holiday time you have actually set up. It may say you need to do an urgent rescheduling, or your time off hasn't been authorized, or you require to validate the dates.

Wait, have not you currently validated the dates? Didn't you already get the time off approved?

There's a link in the e-mail for you to click so you can deal with the matter. You don't want to click that link. It will either infect your computer system or gadget with malware or take you to a website to visit and effectively hand your credentials over to a scammer.

Is it coming from your regular scheduler or HR agent or the e-mail normally utilized by your business? If the answer to any of these concerns is "no," do not click on that link.

Instead, begin a new e-mail conversation, or pick up the phone, or walk down the hall to your HR agent and ask about the problem. Remember that the scoundrels are attempting to get you flustered, so you'll act impulsively without believing. The best thing to do is remain calm and suspicious.
