This month, the universe is putting on a show—and it’s grinning right at us! Stargazers are in for a treat as a rare alignment of planets forms what appears to be a giant "smiley face" in the night sky. Here’s everything you need to know to catch this breathtaking event.
The celestial smile will be visible just after sunset on June 24–26. The best viewing window is about 30–45 minutes after the sun dips below the horizon, when the sky is dark enough to spot the planetary lineup but still bright enough for the "face" to stand out.
While planetary alignments aren’t uncommon, this particular configuration—where three bright planets form a near-perfect smiling arc—is a rare visual treat. The last time a similar celestial smile appeared was in 2016, and it won’t happen again for several years.
This phenomenon occurs when planets align in a way that, from Earth’s perspective, creates an optical illusion of facial features. The curvature of the "mouth" (Jupiter) below the "eyes" (Venus and Mars) is what makes the effect so striking.
