BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – – Grow Louisiana Coalition's "Energize the Vote" event at Capitol Park Museum provided gubernatorial candidates the floor to speak on existing events.
Five Louisiana gubernatorial candidates spoke on an open online forum about topics associating with taxes, our oil and gas market, and educating our youth in STEM and STEAM.
" They're learning about everything in terms of how to be prepared to complete in the labor force and to pursue these as careers. Therefore I 'd rather them invest now than miss out on a career opportunity since they picked not to do it in high school or junior high school," stated Shawn Wilson, Democratic Candidate.
In addition to education being at the top of this list, many candidates stated restructuring Louisiana's "tax code" could produce new opportunities for kids, maintain companies, and bring families back to the state.
" We are already on a path to zero state income tax. We require to make it easier and more foreseeable with less exemptions and exemptions and all of that so that services can figure out what their tax burden is going to be," stated Senator Sharon Hewitt, Republican Candidate.
Republican State Representative Richard Nelson said taxes are one fundamental method to make Louisiana more competitive.
" I think when you take a look at the states that are growing like Texas and Florida, they're growing six times faster than us in the last 10 years. Those states really make more of those choices in your area. They let residents manage that money and I think it ends up with a much more effective and far more responsive federal government," said Nelson..
Proposed rape and incest carve out to abortion ban shot down in committee.
Something all the candidates agreed on is informing our youth. Putting funding towards curricula and technical institutions is the driving aspect for keeping graduates in-house.
" Whatever is finest for that trainee's result. I desire those high schools to be nearly an incubator for those kids to do it right here. And the energy market and the industrial industry will benefit most from that. They're desperate for certified workers," said Stephen Waguespack, Republican Candidate.
Independent Hunter Lundy thinks changing our economy through literacy can eliminate a number of problems like criminal activity and poverty.
" I'll inform you today, I'm for I'm dissatisfied that they didn't choose a higher minimum wage. We got 800,000 single moms and dads in Louisiana, moms that have two jobs that are working minimum wage and their kid can't read in the 3rd grade and he's already on the pipeline to prison because of it. That has to alter," stated Lundy.
To top the excitement at Wednesday's event, there were kids here from robotics teams and business from the energy industry present to display their work.
